Do I need to purchase an SSL certificate to accept credit cards?

AlohaShop

With AlohaShop, you would not purchase an SSL certificate and it's not an option (so don't go out and buy one, because we wouldn't be able to use it for your site).

AlohaShop integrates with Mal's shopping cart which provides secure processing pages for payments, and who hosts the checkout pages for your site. So you can use a service like 2checkout.com, Authorize.net, Paypal or collect credit card information and process cards manually without having to buy an SSL certificate yourself. You are using Mal's SSL, so it's secure.

Boutique Cart

SSL is required when you accept credit cards (outside of Paypal), but it's optional if you want to buy a certificate or use our free shared certificate. We will automatically set up your cart using our free shared SSL certificate unless/until you purchase one.

What's the difference between Shared SSL and Private SSL?

Shared SSL - it's free, but the URLs that your shopping cart and account pages (all secure pages) use will be http://www.redpeachsolutions.org/~yoursite instead of your regular domain. The site will look the same, but the URL will be different. Occasionally customers may notice this and wonder why and/or could possibly abandon their order.

Private SSL - A private SSL certificate is $99/year and is created and used for your domain only. So all pages of your site, secure or not, use your domain. The SSL certificate information has your business info, and you are given an SSL icon to display on your site.
