What search engines should I submit my site to?

You may see claims by companies who say they will submit your site to dozens, even hundreds or thousands of search engines and guarantee you a bazillion hits if you pay them X amount. Don't do it! For one thing, even they could guarantee you a huge amount of hits, they're likely not even real people visiting your site and even if they were, what are the chances that they are even in your target audience?

There are a few major search engines that you should submit your site to, and the rest of the search engines out there actually get their listings from these major search engines.

And take note of a couple of things:

  • Submitting your site to search engines isn't even absolutely necessary as their spiders will likely find your site on their own.
  • Don't expect instant results. Submit your site and then check the search engines for your site in about 4-6 weeks. Also, if you don't have good keyword-rich content on your site that search engine spiders can read, and you haven't done any advertising, optimization or any kind of marketing other than creating your website, you likely won't get very good placement in the search engines (which means less traffic and if you're selling something, less orders).
So here is a list of the major search engines and directories you might consider submitting your site to:

Google - http://www.google.com
Direct submission link: http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl
Netscape also gets it's content from here.

Yahoo - http://www.yahoo.com
Direct submission link: http://search.yahoo.com/info/submit.html

Ask - http://www.ask.com
There is currently not a way to submit your site for free to ask.com. They do offer paid listings.

All the Web - http://www.alltheweb.com
Direct submission link: http://www.alltheweb.com/help/webmaster/submit_site
Lycos.com also gets their information from here.

Live Search (from MSN) - http://www.live.com
Direct submission link: http://search.msn.com.sg/docs/submit.aspx

Dmoz.org - http://www.dmoz.org
Direct submission link: http://www.dmoz.org/add.html

The rest of the search engines mostly get their information from one or more of the above services or other paid advertising programs.
